  Getting Married in New Jersey

Non-residents of NJ:

You do not have to be a resident of NJ, but if that is the case, you must get married in the county where the license is obtained.  If you are using our Garden/Parlor here in Clayton, the municipal court is just a few blocks down the street from us on Delsea Drive.  I'd be happy to arrange your consultation during their hours so that you can combine both into one trip.  Please call them first to arrange an appointment at 856-881-2882.

NJ Residents:

NJ residents may apply in the municipal of the bride or groom's residence, and the license is good for anywhere in the state.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age or have parental consent.

You must not be a party to another marriage, civil union or domestic partnership in NJ or recognized by NJ.

HAVE YOUR APPLICATION READY BEFORE YOU GO

It's not necessary, but you may print out and complete the license application form by clicking on the link below:

http://www.state.nj.us/health/forms/reg-77.pdf

IMPORTANT!!! Do not sign the application before coming in,

you must sign in front of the clerk.

Required documents when applying for a marriage license:

  1. Proof of identity by presenting your driver’s license, passport or state/federal I.D.
  2. Proof of your residency.
  3. Your social security card or social security number.*
  4. A witness, 18 years of age or older.
  5. The $28 application fee.

*Social security number is required by law for US citizens and will be kept confidential.

Any documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Requested additional documents

(these documents are helpful but not required):

  1. A copy of your birth certificate to establish your parents’ names and related birth information.
  2. If you are divorced, have had a previous civil union dissolved, domestic partnership terminated or have had a civil union annulled, please bring the decree(s) or the civil annulment documents.
  3. If your former spouse/civil union or domestic partner is deceased, please bring the death certificate.
  4. You may want to call ahead to get your registrar's hours and see if an appointment is necessary.

After you apply:

There is a 72-hour waiting period before the license is issued. The waiting period begins when the application is filed with the Local Registrar and is valid for six months from the date accepted, unless the Registrar has given prior approval to extend the validity of the application to a maximum of one year.

Only one marriage license may be granted from a marriage application. If the license expires before being used, a new application must be made and another $28 fee remitted.

After your ceremony,

I will file your licence for you in the municipal in which your ceremony is performed.  Approximately 2 to 7 days after your ceremony, you can contact them to pick up a certified copy of your marriage license.  There is a $10 fee.  If you are a long distance from this municipal, give them a call and I believe that you can take care of it by mail.  This certified copy is the legal copy that you will need for any documentation ... such as for changing your Social Security, your license, proof for a mortgage or insurance, etc.

It looks like a lot ... but really, it's easy ...

and the clerks are very helpful with any questions you have!  And if you come to see me, we'll go into everything in detail before you go.

Making it as easy and stress-free as possible on you ...
that's my job!
